Boston Ithaca Islet Club Annual Meeting held at UMass Medical

Date Posted: Monday, April 30, 2018

Laura Alonso, MD, hosted the 2018 Boston Ithaca Islet Club Annual Meeting, April 26-28, at the UMass Diabetes Center of Excellence.  The two-day forum consisted of research talks by scientists studying pancreatic islet function, development, growth, immunology and transplantation.  Participants included established researchers, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from throughout the northeast United States and Canada.

Over the past 25 years, the weekend conference has been a valuable opportunity for scientific discussions and interactions that have led to numerous collaborations and friendships.  It allows senior faculty to cement collaborations and junior trainees to boost their careers.  Presentations are focused on islet biology and the regulation of glucose homeostasis in the context of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes and obesity.

Scientists in Boston and Ithaca founded the club in 1992, and the annual meeting has been held every year since then to showcase unpublished cutting edge research.

Dr. Alonso, MD, Director, Beta Cell Biological Studies, George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation Term Chair in Diabetes, was proud to bring the meeting to Worcester's UMass Medical School for the very first time.
