Understanding How Treatment Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Work

It is not uncommon for patients, family members and loved ones to have many questions and concerns about medication treatment for opioid use disorder. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation in society about medication treatment. 

Some individuals express concern that medication treatment is just "replacing one drug for another” or believe that someone isn’t truly getting better if they are taking medications, both of which are untrue.

This Fact Sheet is meant to inform you on exactly how these medications work in the brain so you have a better understanding of why medications are an effective treatment approach for opioid use disorders.
