Program and Application Questions

How many first-year fellowship positions does
the UMass Chan Fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine have?

  • We have six positions available.

Are there different tracks within the fellowship?

  • There are two tracks. The standard track is three years long and focuses primarily on clinical training, although fellows are expected to conduct an original research project. The research track is a four-year program (two research followed by two clinical). For details, visit: Research opportunities

How many applications does the fellowship receive?

  • In recent years, we have received more than 800 applications.

Is there a minimum board score for applicants to be considered?

  • We do not have a board score cutoff for consideration. However, applicants with low scores are unlikely to be granted interviews unless other aspects of their applications are unusually impressive.

Do you accept applicants who are on H and J visas?

  • Applicants who are currently on H or J visas are welcome to apply. However, we do not initiate the visa application process for those who do not already have a visa.

What are the requirements for consideration?

  • Completion of an ACGME-certified internal medicine residency prior to starting fellowship
  • ERAS application
  • USMLE transcript (steps one, two and three)
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the internal medicine residency program director or associate program director
  • Personal statement

What is the application deadline?

  • All applications and supporting materials must be received by Aug.1.

What happens next?

  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We interview approximately 10% of applicants. Interviews take place in September and October. We participate in the NRMP Match.

Will interviews be in person or virtual this year?

  • We are continuing with 100% virtual interviews this year. However, we plan to offer some fellow-led weekend tours for interviewees. Participation in the tours will be optional. In order to avoid bias during the ranking process, the program director and faculty will not have access to the list of tour attendees.

Are there options for further cardiovascular training at UMass Chan?
