Annual Funds

Annual funds are critical to the success and effectiveness of UMass Chan Medical School. They enable school leaders to implement innovative programs and opportunities in research and education that will affect the future health and well-being of us all.

When should you make your gift?

Support any of our annual funds may be made by June 30 to be counted in the current fiscal year.

What annual fund designations can you support?

Annual Fund - Unrestricted

When you make a gift to the Annual Fund at UMass Chan Medical School you are providing important unrestricted financial support. This allows us to put the funds to use wherever the need is greatest as specific needs arise throughout the year. This includes, but is not limited to, equipment and clinical care upgrades, faculty and staff recruitment, and curriculum advancements for our next generation of scientists, nurses and physicians.

Annual Research Fund/Worcester Foundation Grants

Funds raised through the Annual Research Fund and Hudson Hoagland Society support the Worcester Foundation Grants. These "seed" grants allow talented scientists to explore new, groundbreaking ideas and serve to fill critical funding gaps while waiting for federal research grants.

Each year, UMass Chan Medical School scientists submit proposals for Worcester Foundation Grant funding. These "seed" grants are awarded based on a competitive process and they have accelerated research in cancer, heart disease, ALS, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, RNA interference (gene silencing) and stem cell research, and represent some of the most innovative and medically promising work being done at UMass Chan.

T.H. Chan School of Medicine

As alumni from the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School reflect on the excellence and value of their education, many show their gratitude by supporting the school through generous gifts to one of several funds.

We invite you to support the Medical Education Fund, Alumni Scholarship Fund or Financial Aid Endowment Fund. The Medical Education Fund supports the latest in educational technology as well as advancements to our curriculum and training programs, all with a goal of enhancing student learning.

The Alumni Scholarship Fund makes accessible a comprehensive and personally rewarding medical education of the highest quality, while easing the burden of student loan debt. Through continued support of this fund, we are able to make available need-based scholarships to students so they are not deterred by the financial constraints associated with medical school costs. Although our tuition remains reasonable when compared to those of private medical schools, many of our students, especially those who are first-generation college students, have a difficult time meeting expenses.

Our dedicated Financial Aid Endowment Fund allows us to attract talented students regardless of their ability to pay and provides those who are financially disadvantaged with the opportunity to pursue a medical education that they may otherwise not be able to access. At UMass Chan Medical School, it is becoming increasingly important to have a steady source of funds available. With your help, we can make a difference in the life of a future medical student and continue to transform young people’s lives.

Our Danny Cancer Fund

The Our Danny Cancer Fund, named after Dottie and Dan Manning’s son, was established from a dream. Danny dreamed of the day when he would be cancer-free and able to resume his life as a 21-year-old. Education, marriage and children were all part of Danny’s dream that was left unfulfilled when he died in 1994. Just as the Mannings were recovering from their loss, Dottie’s husband was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and died in 1997. Ironically, Danny and Dan Sr. might have survived their cancers if they were being treated today…because of cancer research!

The Our Danny Cancer Fund is rapidly advancing the translational cancer research underway at the UMass Cancer Center. The Cancer Center’s focus is to better understand the biology of cancer in combination with the development of innovative and effective measures for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease, particularly in the following areas:

  • Women’s Health (including breast, ovarian and uterine cancers)
  • Hematologic Malignancies
  • Gastrointestinal Cancers (gastric, colorectal and pancreatic)
  • Genitourinary Cancers (bladder, kidney and prostate)
  • Cancer Risk Behaviors
  • Developmental Therapeutics (gene therapy/experimental oncology)

Please continue to support the Our Danny Cancer Fund to accelerate cancer research. Let’s help make Danny’s dream and our dream – a cure for cancer – a reality.
