Turning Age 65
If you are turning age 65, please call or visit your local Social Security office for confirmation of your Social Security and Medicare eligibility. If eligible, you should enroll in Medicare Part A.
If you are eligible and you continue working after age 65, you should NOT enroll in Medicare Part B until you (the insured) retire.
A spouse of an active employee who is age 65 or over, and is covered by the active employee's plan, does not need to enroll in Medicare Part B until the active employee/insured retires.
Retirement after Turning Age 65
If you are retiring from state service and have already turned 65, you should contact your local Social Security office for confirmation of your Social Security and Medicare eligibility. If you are eligible, you must enroll in Medicare Part B within the required time or risk having to pay federal government penalties and losing your GIC health insurance.
If you cancel or do not pay Medicare Part B, the GIC is required to terminate your GIC health coverage. This would mean that you would only have Medicare Part A coverage for inpatient hospital care.
