Professional Development

The RSRC is dedicated to providing teachers and administrators with professional development opportunities which increase their understanding of mathematics and science and support their teaching of students. Courses are offered during the summer. Quarterly network meetings provide ongoing opportunities for teachers and administrators to meet and discuss classroom issues during the school year.

MTEL Prep Course for Middle School Licensure The Regional Science Resource Center will be sponsoring a course designed to help prepare teachers to take the middle school mathematics portion of the MTEL (Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure).  The course will be taught by Nancy Swanson, a math teacher and facilitator retired from Leominster Public Schools.  Classes will be held on the following Monday and Thursday mornings from 9:00am to 12:30pm for 6 Sessions.

Dates: July 28, 31, August 4, 7, 11 & 14, 2014

Cost: $400.00

Identifying and Developing Student Conceptions for Scientific Thinking

The Massachusetts Professional Development Institute will focus on identifying, analyzing, and developing grades 3-8 students conceptual thinking about physical science whhether concrete, emerging, or mis-constructed.  Participants will deepen their fundamental knowledge of how students conceptual thinking develops in areas such as Force and Motion, Properties of Matter, and Energy Transformation.  Classes will be held from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm at Anna Maria College, Paxton, MA,  

Dates: July 15-18 and July 21-23 and a follow up afternoon in the fall, Date: TBD

 IAAG Course

Increasing Accessibility to Algebra & Geometry for ALL Students.  

Sponsored by the @ SCALE Project Initiative of the MA Dept of Higher Education's STEM Pipeline Fund

This course offers foundational math content and pedagogical strategies for general education, inclusion and special education teachers of grades 5 through 10.  It strengthens teachers' understanding of relationships between concepts in geometry and algebra.

Intended Audience: Teachers in grades 5-10 who support ALL Math Learners, ELL Teachers, G/T teachers as well as math coaches and specialists.

Dates: Tuesday, July 29 - Friday, August 1; Monday, August 4 - Wednesday, August 6, 2014

Follow-up Date: Saturday, October 18, 2014

DSAC Courses

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) is making available a limited amount of professional development to Level 3 districts and schools through its six regionally-based District and School Assistance Centers (DSACs).  The Regional Science Resource Center @ UMass Medical School is an approved vendor for four DSAC mathematics course offerings:

  • Advanced Mathematical Decision Making
  • Increasing Accessibility to Algebra & Geometry for ALL Learners
  • Massachusetts Intel Mathematics Initiative (MIMI)
  • Mathematics Learning Communities (MLC)

AP Calculus

The AP Calculus Network meetings include opportunities to explore calculus content, find out about updates and changes to the AP exam, and ask questions of colleagues. If there are new AP teachers in your district and other districts that you know, please extend an invitation for them to join us. Please feel free to bring along copies of resources you would like to share with the group.
