Program Description

Practitioners and other interested persons, from across the Commonwealth, who are or interact with individuals with serious mental illness, many of whom must deal with risks to safety and wellbeing will be provided the opportunity to learn from formal presentations and from each other. The conference focuses on many common problems facing persons with mental illness and their clinicians as they work together. The unifying focus is lessening risk—risks faced by persons with mental illness, staff, and the community at-large, such as trauma, disempowerment and burnout.

Attendees will learn a great number of specific ways in which they can decrease risks in each of the subject areas of the conference. The part of the conference on burnout will focus directly on providers’ own wellness, and through practitioners functioning better, on the wellness of those they serve. All presentations allow ample time for Q&A. The conference is set up so that the lunch time is a period where folks from different parts of Massachusetts and beyond can “compare notes”. We know from years and years of putting on this conference that that does occur during this time period.

Overall Goal:

This Presentation will provide participants with an understanding of the ways in which they can decrease risks in each of the conference subject areas: Risk of Weight Gain, Risk of Repeat, Risk of Disempowerment of persons with SMI, Risk of Burnout, Risk of Murder Suicide, and Risk of Traumatizing Inpatient Experiences. The part of the conference on burnout will focus directly on providers’ own wellness, and through practitioners functioning better, on the wellness of those they serve.

Objectives: After attending the entire conference, participants should be able to:

• Discuss effective ways to address weight gain in persons with SMI.
• Identify and discuss the potential risks of disempowering persons with SMI.
• Identify at least 3 ways for clinicians to minimize the risk of disempowering persons with SMI.
• Identify at least 3 ways clinicians can minimize the risk of burnout for themselves, their colleagues, and for supervisees.
• Discuss the potential risks of traumatizing persons with SMI in hospital settings.
• Identify at least 3 ways for clinicians to minimize the risk of traumatizing persons with SMI in hospital settings.
• Identify and discuss the dynamics within the relationship of murder-suicide and how this understanding can be used to decrease the risk of murder-suicide.
• Identify and discuss factors involved in the growing issue of criminalization of persons with SMI.

Agenda

Registration Fee: $150. Registrations should not be mailed unless receipt can be guaranteed by June 14, 2013. On-site registration: $175.

Group and Discounted Fee: $80. Employees of the Department of Mental Health are offered a discounted rate of $80. Institutions and organizations that enroll 5 or more persons at the same time are offered a discounted rate of $80.

This tax-deductible fee includes lunch, parking (in visitor parking garage, not valet) and continuing education credit.

Deadline: Pre-registration will be closed when space is full or at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the latest. Registration should not be mailed unless receipt before that time is guaranteed. On-site registration will not be accepted when space is full—so register early.

Cancellation Policy: If you cancel your registration before May 25, 2013 your fee is refundable less a $25 processing charge. After that date, no refunds will be given for any reason—including weather and other emergencies. Substitutions are always acceptable with prior notification.

Weather Emergency Policy: While the probability of delay or cancellation of the conference is highly unlikely, we recognize that we are all subject to the vagaries of New England weather. If a weather emergency does occur, and you are in doubt as to whether or not the course will be held, call (508) 368-0704 before 4 p.m. on June 18, 2013.

Comfort: Business casual is very appropriate for this conference. Although every attempt will be made to ensure the comfort of our attendees, we suggest that you may wish to bring a sweater/jacket if you tend to be chilly.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Massachusetts Medical Society for Continuing Medical Education through the Joint Sponsorship of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society and the Public Sector Division of the UMass Chan Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry.

The Massachusetts Psychiatric Society is accredited by the Massachusetts Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Nurses: Department of Mental Health – Central West Area is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses INC., an accredited approver of American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This Continuing Education Activity carries 6 contact hours.

Social Workers: This activity is approved for 6 Social Work Continuing Education Credits CMA061913.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC): DMH Northeast Area Staff Development Office is an Approved continuing Education Provider (ACEPTM) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. DMH Northeast Suburban Area Staff Development solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. 6 hours.

Occupational Therapists: Department of Mental Health - Central West Area is an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) approved provider. The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA. This program is assigned .6 CEU’s. Learning Level: Intermediate. No partial credit will be given for Continuing Education credits (Does not apply to CMEs).
