Program Description

The transition from childhood to adulthood is a difficult time for youth and families in the best of circumstances. The exigencies of this transition are compounded by serious emotional disturbance/psychopathology. Quagmires abound in service systems nationwide that have as much trouble transitioning youth from the child system to the adult system of care as the youth does making the transition. This conference examines multiple aspects of the care and treatment of transition age youth, providing information from the system to the individual level that can directly affect clinical practice, policy, and research.

Objectives: After attending the entire conference, participants should be able to:

  • Describe normal development through the transition age years
  • Explain the commonly made mistakes in treating transition-age youth with serious mental illness
  • Employ appropriate psychological treatment for transition-age youth with serious mental illness
  • State at least two novel approaches to community-based treatment for transition-age youth with serious mental illness
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the phenomenology of serious mental illness during the transition-age period
  • Employ at least one intervention for fire setting in transition-age youth
