Subspecialties 

The full range of medical and surgical subspecialties is represented in the Department of Pediatrics.  Residents work with faculty attendings and nurse practitioners to provide patient care.  Ample elective time is provided for each resident to gain experience with multiple subspecialties. 

Residents interested in further subspecialty training have been uniformly successful in securing the fellowship positions of their choice.

• Adolescent 
• Allergy 
• Anesthesia 
• Cardiology 
  • Service also provides fetal cardiac consultation and echocardiography. 
• Child Protection 
  • Provides inpatient and outpatient consultations of suspected victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and/or neglect. 
• Dermatology 

  • Provides general outpatient pediatric dermatology clinics, laser and surgical clinics, inpatient consults, a multidisciplinary clinic with Genetics, and a regional epidermolysis bullosa clinic  
• Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics 
  • Includes Infant, Toddler and Preschool clinics (with special expertise in autistic spectrum disorders) and other clinics related to Attention Deficit Disorders, Behavior Therapies for Encopresis/Enuresis, Growth and Nutrition, Pediatric Psychology problems, Anxiety disorders and School-Age children with a variety of issues.  In addition, the largest Early Intervention program in the state of Massachusetts is closely affiliated with the Division. 
• Endocrine/Diabetes 

  • Provides clinical care for children and young adults with common and rare endocrine disorders.  The Children's Diabetes Center provides comprehensive care for children with type I and type II diabetes mellitus, and is a board representative and provider of medical direction for the Barton Camp for Diabetes Education.  Current clinical research includes studies in growth and sexual development, diabetes, CF diabetes, bone health, metabolic symdrome, and endocrine disruptors. 
• Gastroenterology  

  • Inpatient and outpatient care of the spectrum of Pediatric GI disorders including GE reflux, IBD, FTT, chronic diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain and GI bleeding.  Opprotunity to work with Pediatric dieticians.  Procedures performed include upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, pH probes, lactose breath tests and liver biopsies.  Clinical research is currently ongoing in Hepatitis C, IBD and esophageal disorders.
• Growth and Nutrition 
  • Interdisciplinary clinic with a family-centered approach to the evaluation and treatment of infants and children with Failure to Thrive. 
• Genetics 
  • Prenatal counseling, NICU and Nursery consults, as well as participation in multispeciality clinics such as Orthopedics, Dermatology, and Craniofacial. 
• Hematology/Oncology 
  • Includes a Survivors follow-up clinic to study and treat long-term effects of cancer treatment, as well as a Sickle Cell clinic. 
• HIV 
  • Provides comprehensive care to children and families in conjunction with AIDS Project Worcester. 
• Infectious Disease  

  • Provides comprehensive evaluation of all infectious disease issues in inpatient and outpatient settings, including a Travel Clinic.
• Immunology 
  • Comprehensive assessment and care provided to children and families with immune disorders throughout Central Massachusetts, as well as referrals from other areas, i.e., Connecticut , Maine and New York.  Dr. John Sullivan also specializes in x-linked lymphoproliferative disorder. 
• International Health 
  • Department subsidized international health travel to many underserved areas of the world, including Zambia, Liberia and Ecuador. 
• Nephrology 
  • Inpatient and outpatient care of newborns, children adn teens presenting with renal disorders such as acute or chronic renal failure, electrolytes and acid/base abnormalities, hypertension, recurrent urinary tract infections or malformations, porteinuria, hematuria, kidney stones.  We also offer acute and chronic dialysis and kidney biopsy.  We work in close collaboration with the pediatric urology and adult nephrology.  
• Neurology 
• Neurosurgery 
  • Cares exclusively for infants, children and teens who require complex central and peripheral nervous system surgery.  The program specializes in children and teens with brain and spinal cord tumors, congenital abnormalities, spasticity, epilepsy, head and spine trauma, craniofacial disorders, vascular malformations, and brachial plexus injury.

  • Includes consultation/liaison to inpatient pediatrics, infant psychiatry clinic, psychopharmacology clinic, child diagnostic clinic, wraparound services, adolescent psychiatric inpatient care, and other services. 
• Pulmonary 
  • Includes a Clinical, Research and Training center certified by the Cystic Fibroses Foundation, as well as Asthma and Sleep Disorders clinics. 
• Research 
  • Research projects with internal and external faculty members, as well as individual exploration is encouraged. 
• Rheumatology 
  • Comprehensive assessment and care provided to children and families with rheumatologic disorders throughout Central Massachusetts. 
• Sports Medicine 
• Surgery 
  • Three fellowship trained pediatric surgeons supervise a full range of laparoscopic procedures, inpatient and outpatient surgeries, consults and clinics as well as provide the region's only level 1 trauma service for children.  Also encompasses the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Worcester program.
