Intensive Training in Motivational Interviewing (OE 936)

The Center for Integrated Primary Care is proud to offer a course in Motivational Interviewing designed for a variety of healthcare professionals.

Motivational Interviewing is an evidence based approach to promoting health behavior change.

Providing quality patient care requires patients be engaged through participation in:

  • Routine preventive care- colonoscopies, mammograms, vaccinations
  • Completion of routine labs
  • Self management leading to reductions in cholesterol, A1c, or blood pressure

Motivational Interviewing is a critical skill for physicians who wish to:

  • Increase patient's self-management of chronic diseases
  • Facilitate tobacco cessation
  • Engage patients in active (non-pharmacological) management of chronic pain
  • Address issues of problematic alcohol, opiate, and other drug use
  • Improve patient's medication adherence

You will be trained to practice this patient-centered, evidence based approach to facilitating patient's health behavior change.

The principles of Motivational Interviewing are simple.  Developing a competent practice in Motivational Interviewing requires an investment in time.  This training program is grounded in the evidence for Motivational Interviewing Training.

Participation in the training typically costs $1400 per person.  However, the training is being offered for free to six medical students. The training will require attendance at 5 workshops and two hours of individual work.  The workshops are scheduled during students protected time for electives.
