Programs for Women's Advancement and Leadership

The Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) develops a variety of programs and initiatives to foster equity in the availability of resources and opportunities for advancement, focused particularly on leadership and women faculty.

Four initiatives that highlight our efforts in this area are:

  • The Leadership Speakers Series: This new series is intended to help faculty enhance their leadership competencies. Monthly presentations by national experts will be accompanied by skills workshops where faculty can apply what they have learned.
  • Gender Equity Initiative (GEI) Project: Associate Vice Provost Judy Ockene, PhD, MEd, MA, the Barbara Helen Smith Chair in Preventive & Behavioral Medicine and professor of medicine, led the team that recently completed a Gender and Race Compensation Equity study. Extensive analyses did not reveal any systemic discrepancies in compensation by gender or race. The OFA will now begin a process to evaluate advancement in academic rank by gender and race and identify factors that impact advancement.
  • Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM): We will continue to assist faculty in the preparation of application materials for ELAM, a competitive and highly selective program focused on preparing senior women faculty to move into positions of institutional leadership where they can affect positive change. Gyongyi Szabo, MD, PhD, associate dean for clinical & translational research, and Deborah M. DeMarco, MD, associate dean for graduate medical education were selected as ELAM fellows in 2009; Julia D. Andrieni, MD, associate professor and vice chair of the department of medicine and chief of the division of general internal medicine, and Katherine F. Ruiz de Luzuriaga, MD, professor of medicine and pediatrics, chief of the division of pediatric immunology, infectious diseases and rheumatology, and associate provost for Global Health became ELAM fellows in 2010
  • Joy McCann Professorship: The purpose of the Professorship is to identify and reward female faculty leadership in medical education, research, patient care and community service.
