Gyongyi Szabo, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and associate dean for clinical & translational research, was interviewed by
New Scientist Magazine on her new study that shows heavy alcohol consumption weakens the immune system, making chronic heavy drinkers more susceptible to viruses, including HIV. Dr. Szabo’s research supports earlier studies that indicate heavy drinkers with HIV die sooner than non-drinkers and that their immune systems might be less vigilant against cancer.
