UMass Chan named to Boston Globe’s Top Places to Work for 2023

Diversity, equity and inclusion practices at UMass Chan also recognized

UMass Chan Medical School has been named one of The Boston Globe’s 2023 Top Places to Work in Massachusetts for the second consecutive year. UMass Chan is the only institution of higher education in the commonwealth to be included on the 2023 list, which includes 175 organizations of all sizes and industries. The Medical School is also among 23 companies recognized for its diversity, equity and inclusion practices by The Boston Globe.

“We take immense pride in being recognized for a second consecutive year, and particularly in being acknowledged for our dedicated focus on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives this year,” said Chancellor Michael F. Collins. “This achievement underscores our commitment to fostering a collaborative and connected community and celebrates the outstanding efforts of our colleagues. It is the latest evidence of how UMass Chan is advancing medicine, nursing, biomedical research, DEI and public service together thanks to the dedication of our employees.”

The rankings in Top Places to Work are based on confidential survey information collected by Energage, an independent company specializing in employee engagement and retention, from more than 137,000 individuals at 347 Massachusetts organizations. The survey measures employee opinions about their company’s direction, execution, connection, management, work, pay and benefits, and engagement.

For the first time, Energage and The Boston Globe took a closer look at what companies on the Top Places to Work list are doing to encourage policies that support diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. Of the more than 30 companies that filled out questionnaires about programs and policies related to recruiting and hiring, compensation and benefits, professional development, employee involvement, and visibility of commitment, the Medical School was among 23 companies that stood out as 2023 “DEI champions,” according to The Boston Globe.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of the Top Places to Work for DEI. We make a concerted effort to listen to the needs of the members of our community and move beyond just diverse demographics to real inclusion and belonging for all,” said Marlina Duncan, EdD, vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion.

“The best employers are always striving to put their people first, whether they’re honoring small individual accomplishments or adjusting company-wide policies to become more inclusive,” said Katie Johnson, the Globe’s Top Places to Work editor.
