UMass Chan researcher receives $300,000 grant from Avon 39 to further breast cancer research

UMass Medical School was among seven organizations awarded grant funding at the 14th annual Avon 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer event in Boston on Sunday to help explore new ways to treat aggressive forms of breast cancer that do not respond well to treatment. Leslie Shaw, PhD, associate professor of molecular, cell & cancer biology, received a $300,000 grant to examine a mutation in gene IRS-2 to determine impacts on patient outcomes.

AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer is the largest fund-raising event for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, which began in 2003. Funds raised at each event provide direct impact in the area where the event takes place, and also help make sure that care and research programs nationwide have adequate resources to make the most progress possible. The Boston event on Sunday, July 10, raised $3 million.
