UMass Medical School student Marissa Mastrocola will spend the summer before her second year of medical school pursuing her interest in orthopedic surgery. Selected for one of a handful of internships offered through Nth Dimensions, Mastrocola will take part in clinical and research activities under the direction of Gleeson Rebello, MBBS, orthopedic surgeon at Mass General Hospital and instructor in orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School. She is the first UMMS student to receive the competitive internship.

She will spend time observing orthopedic procedures in the operating room as well as in clinic and outpatient settings, and will have opportunities to network with colleagues throughout the department.

The eight-week program includes housing in Boston and a stipend that will allow Mastrocola to attend an orientation in Washington, D.C., and several conferences, including the annual meeting of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Afterward, Mastrocola will receive developmental support throughout medical school from her mentor and from other orthopedic surgeons in the network.

While Mastrocola hasn’t yet decided what her medical specialty will be, her interest in orthopedic surgery was piqued during college at Elon University, where she studied sports medicine, and after, when she worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a clinical research coordinator in orthopedic surgery.

"I’m grateful for this opportunity to further explore orthopedics and honored to be representing UMass in a national program promoting diversity in the field,” Mastrocola said.

Nth Dimensions, which was founded in 2004 by orthopedic surgeons, works collaboratively with academic institutions, community surgeons and the industry to address the scarcity of women and underrepresented minorities in the field of orthopedic surgery. Their mission is to provide resources, expertise and experience through strategic pipeline initiatives.
