Robert Baldor, MD, senior vice chair and professor of family medicine & community health, is the 2016 recipient of the Allen Crocker Health Services Award. The distinction is presented each year to a clinician who most exemplifies a total dedication to excellence and an unyielding belief in the worth and dignity of the lives of individuals with disabilities, characteristics to which Dr. Crocker devoted his career. The award is given by the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services.
“Like Dr. Allen Crocker, an internationally recognized expert in caring for children and adults with developmental disabilities, Dr. Baldor’s day-to-day practice is dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of individuals with intellectual disability,” said DDS Commissioner Elin M. Howe. “At a time when many physicians are hesitant to serve individuals with both typical and complex health care issues, Dr. Baldor welcomes them. He recognizes and embraces the inherent worth of each individual he treats, strives to understand their concerns and supports them to achieve the best quality of life possible.”
Baldor said he is humbled by his patients, who, despite severe disabilities, approach life with determination and a smile that inspires him and makes his work worthwhile.
“I had the fortune of working with Dr. Crocker as a member of the Governor's Commission on Development Disabilities and was struck not just by his intellect, but by his kind and caring demeanor,” said Baldor. “He embodied another Boston champion, Dr. Francis Peabody, who in 1927 wrote ‘that the secret in caring for the patient was in caring for the patient.’ I have tried to bring that ideal to my work as well.”
Baldor received the award Tuesday, March 23, during a formal ceremony at the Hall of Flags in the Massachusetts State House.
