The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Employee Charitable Campaign has officially begun. COMECC’s annual campaign this year runs from Nov. 9 through Nov. 25.

“Year after year, UMMS employees are the most generous in the state, contributing to worthy causes that help our neighbors and communities,” said Chancellor Michael F. Collins. “Last year, UMMS employees were the single largest source of donations among all state institutions, contributing nearly 25 percent of the total amount raised statewide.”

This year, for the first time, the UMMS COMECC will be fully online. Beginning on Nov. 9, employees will be able to view a full list of COMECC charities and pledge or donate at https://www.umassmed.edu/COMECCDonate. With more than 1,000 pre-screened non-profits to choose from, COMECC gives employees the opportunity to direct their contributions to a charity doing impactful work on the causes they care most about.

The UMMS COMECC honorary co-chairs this year are Mark Klempner, MD, executive vice chancellor for MassBiologics and professor of medicine; and Jean King, PhD, associate provost for biomedical research and professor of psychiatry.

“Last year, 14 percent more UMMS employees participated in COMECC than in the previous year, and UMMS employee contributions totaled nearly $370,000—a truly impressive demonstration of your generosity,” said Dr. Klempner.

“This year, our goal is to boost employee participation even further and to reach the threshold of $400,000,” said Dr. King. “This is an ambitious but achievable goal and every donation, regardless of size, will move us toward it. More importantly, every donation will support essential charitable work that improves lives and impacts communities. We are proud to work with a group of people who care so deeply.”

James Leary, vice chancellor for community and government relations, reiterated the importance of every donation, adding, “A donation of just one or two dollars per pay period can fund half an hour of clinical services for adults with disabilities or send two children with epilepsy to a morning of summer camp. Larger, bi-weekly donations of $10 can provide 10 children with afterschool programs that give them physical activity, mentoring and homework help, and $50 can fund a month of food for a malnourished child.”

“If you don’t have a charity in mind, please consider your local United Way, which coordinates charity with local communities and nonprofits across Massachusetts, or the UMass Memorial Foundation, which supports research and education at UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care,” said Leary.
