UMass Chan chapter of American Medical Women’s Association hosts October events

The UMass Medical School chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) is hosting a workshop and a networking reception in October.

The Professional Self-Promotion workshop on Monday, Oct. 19, helps students develop their elevator pitches and effective communication skills the day before the networking mixer. The workshop, led by Luanne Thorndyke, MD, vice provost for faculty affairs and professor of medicine, takes place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Hyatt Auditorium (S1-608).

The third annual Women in Medicine Mentoring Reception on Tuesday, Oct. 20, is a yearly networking mixer for female medical students and female physicians. The event features a meet-and-greet social hour followed by a speed-dating-style mixer where students and faculty interact in small group conversations.

“Faculty have described the mentoring reception as an energizing and gratifying experience as student questions prompted them to actively reflect on their own career paths,” said second-year medical student and AMWA coordinator Jessica Feng. “Medical students have shared that they benefited tremendously from hearing the perspectives and experiences of women faculty. It is a wonderful forum to fulfill the shared AMWA and UMMS missions of promoting the advancement of women and diversity in medicine.”
