Works ranging from multimedia paintings to pressed glass sculptures exemplify artist Liz Cutler’s wide ranging artistic interests and talents at her latest exhibit. Cutler will be the featured Artist in Residence at UMass Medical School’s Lamar Soutter Library when Moments and Threads: Artscymath in Wax, Glass & Oils opens on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The exhibit is a mix of art, science and math inspired by Cutler’s collaboration with UMMS mathematician and researcher Catarina Kiefe, PhD, the Cutler Chair in Biomedical Research and chair and professor of quantitative health sciences, and the artist’s father, who she also describes as a mathematician. Dr. Kiefe is the inaugural incumbent of the Cutler Chair, endowed in support of innovative basic science research at UMass Medical School by the Cutler family, long-time champions of the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research.

The collaboration led Cutler to experiment with encaustic art, in which painting with pigments suspended in beeswax and damar resin are fused together with a heat gun, and sculptured glass work created from her response to science. She holds a BFA from the Swain School of Design and is completing her MFA at the Heartwood College of Art. Cutler’s latest art-centered community initiative—she has taught for years—is the establishment of ArtWaves, an art incubator and museum in her hometown of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Moments and Threads: Artscymath in Wax, Glass & Oils is on display at the Lamar Soutter Library from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Friday, Oct. 30. An opening reception will be held at the exhibit on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m.
