UMass Chan to participate in annual book drive benefitting Worcester kids

Donations support summer reading programs in Worcester Public Schools

The annual Worcester: “The City that Reads” Book Drive gets under way on Monday, March 23, and runs through Friday, May 15. For the sixth year, UMass Medical School will be partnering with Worcester Public Schools to make this drive a success. Last year, the city collected more than 32,000 books and the UMMS community was a major contributor.

This year, the city is hoping to collect 35,000 books, many of which will be distributed to Worcester Public Schools in June for the summer reading program. Books will also be given to Head Start, Rainbow Child Development, the African Community Education program and various United Way agencies and Worcester public libraries.

Collection bins for new and gently used books suitable for pre-K through grade 8 readers will be at the following locations:

  • Medical School lobby
  • Albert Sherman Center second floor bridge
  • Lazare Research Building lobby
  • South Street first floor (near mailroom)
  • MassBiologics cafeteria
  • Schrafft Center front desk area
