Daniel Y. Kim, MD, FACS, has been appointed chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center, Terence R. Flotte, MD, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the school of medicine, has announced.

“I enthusiastically believe that the vision for the department Dan has described will serve as the template for enhancing clinical and academic excellence in the fields of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery for years to come,” said Dr. Flotte.

Dr. Kim joined the UMMS faculty in 1992 as assistant professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and chief of head and neck surgery at UMass Memorial; he was promoted to associate professor in 2000 and has been interim chair of the department since the retirement of William Lavelle, MD, in 2011.

A graduate of Boston University, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the residency program in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at New York University, Kim was a clinical and research fellow in Advanced Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he began his exceptional career as a head and neck surgeon with well-known and highly-regarded experience in cancers of the head and neck, including special interest and expertise in thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

“Dan’s goals for the department are ambitious commitments to delivering high quality, innovative patient care in a cost effective way; excelling in student and resident education and training future otolaryngologists; and creating a work environment that fosters professional fulfillment and satisfaction and instills pride in the department and these two great institutions,” Flotte said. “His contributions as a busy clinician, thoughtful teacher and enthusiastic professional colleague make him an ideal leader for the department.”
