The 27th annual UMass Medical School tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., rescheduled to Tuesday, Feb. 10, will shine a spotlight on the many ways in which members of the Medical School community continue Dr. King’s legacy of service.

Joan Reede, MD, dean for diversity and community partnership and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, will deliver the keynote address. Featured in the National Library of Medicine’s Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians exhibit, Dr. Reede is one of the few African American women to hold a deanship at a medical school in the United States. She will offer insights for achieving the UMMS mission to increase the numbers of underrepresented groups in student, faculty and staff positions; improve the cultural competence of our workforce; and eliminate health disparities through research, service and clinical practice.

The awards program will recognize faculty and staff who have contributed to advancing institutional excellence through diversity, civility and cultural competence. Additionally, Martin Luther King Jr. Semester of Service Student Awards for community projects being conducted by students, postdoctoral fellows and residents will be announced.

Recognizing the importance of integrating the visual arts and music to promote healing, the medical school’s MLK celebration will continue through Black History Month in February, with traveling photo and art exhibits highlighting UMMS diversity and its connection to the community, as well as a musical concert to celebrate diversity and service to the community.

The annual tribute will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at noon in the Faculty Conference Room at the Medical School. Doors at 11:30 a.m. for lunch. Pre-registration is requested. Please RSVP or email DIO@umassmed.edu
