UMass Chan hosts State House Health Day

Faculty, staff and students from UMass Medical School provided flu shots, blood pressure screenings, CPR demonstrations and preventative health tips at State House Health Day on Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Great Hall.

Chancellor Michael F. Collins was among 150 people who received flu shots from students from the School of Medicine and Graduate School of Nursing. Margaret Donovan, RN, a GSN student, administered Dr. Collins’ flu shot. Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor of Medical Education, executive deputy chancellor, provost, dean of the School of Medicine and professor of pediatrics, had his blood pressure checked by student Hana Haver. In all, students conducted dozens of blood pressure screenings and BMI readings on the estimated 250 attendees.

Representatives from the UMMS iCELS conducted CPR demonstrations. The UMass Chan Prevention Research Center educated visitors on the health benefits of quitting smoking, simple exercises and healthy recipes.

Rep. Paul J. Donato, (D) Medford, was on hand to participate in the health fair and receive a flu shot.

James Leary, vice chancellor for government and community relations, called the event “a great opportunity to provide valuable health services while also demonstrating to state officials, staff and the general public just how outstanding the commonwealth’s only public medical school is.”
