Video: UMMS chancellor, ALS researcher take ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’

Social media campaign promotes awareness of ALS

UMass Medical School Chancellor Michael F. Collins and Chair and Professor of Neurology Robert H. Brown Jr., DPhil, MD, took the “Ice Bucket Challenge” on Wednesday, Aug. 6, with first-year medical students and members of Dr. Brown’s lab dousing them to raise awareness of ALS.

Drs. Collins and Brown were challenged by WBZ TV’s Bree Sison to take part in the social media campaign. Participants are asked to either post video of themselves being soaked by a bucket of ice water, or donate to ALS research within 24 hours of being issued the challenge.

Collins challenged the community to donate to the UMass ALS Cellucci Fund at www.umassals.com. Brown challenged Rich Kennedy of the Angel Fund and Al Sandrock of Biogen Idec to take the plunge.
