Worcester District Medical Society honors faculty and medical students

Awards and scholarships recognize exceptional service, achievement and contributions

Three UMass Medical School faculty members were honored with awards from the Worcester District Medical Society. The awards were presented at the society’s annual Fall District Meeting in November.


metz-peterW. Peter Metz
, MD, was named the 23rd recipient of the Dr. A. Jane Fitzpatrick Community Service Award for outstanding contributions made beyond professional duties to improve the health and well-being of others. Dr. Metz, clinical professor of psychiatry and pediatrics, established the Communities of Care model for youth with severe emotional disturbance. He is director of Community Child Psychiatry for UMass Memorial Medical Center, and is a learning communities mentor for medical students.

, MD, received the 2013 WDMS Career Achievement Award, which honors an individual who has demonstrated compassion and dedication to the medical needs of patients and the public, and has made significant contributions to the practice of medicine. Dr. Tosi, interim chair and clinical associate professor of urology, also serves as chief physician executive for UMass Memorial Health Care.

, MD, MPH, accepted the 2013 WDMS President’s Award for contributions to organized medicine and the health and well being of the community. Dr. Broadhurst, assistant professor of family medicine & community health, is associate director of the family medicine residency at UMass Medical School. He practices at the UMass Memorial Medical Group’s Shrewsbury Family Practice and is medical director of the UMass Memorial Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.

Additionally, eight School of Medicine students were awarded WDMS scholarships: The Reliant Medical Group Dr. M. Elizabeth Fletcher Award to Achankeng Afiadata ’15; The Saint Vincent Hospital Dr. Gilbert E. Levinson Award to Patrick Bonavitacola ’14; The UMass Memorial Health Care Dr. Samuel Pickens Award to Reza Hosseini Ghomi ’14; The Amaral Family Book Awardto MD/PhD student Patrick Lowe; The Milford Regional Medical Center John A. Rauth Book Award to Jyotsna Mullur ’16; The Priscilla Lamantea Book Award to Sebastian Ramos ’15; The Worcester District Medical Society Dr. Francis Bednarek Award to Jonathan Smits ’14; and The Harrington Memorial Hospital Award to Sara Valente ’14.
