War hero to speak at Veteran’s Day Program

Surgeon and Navy Reservist Mark Price was awarded a Bronze Star for service in Afghanistan

The Diversity and Inclusion Office of UMass Memorial Medical Center invites all members of the clinical system and UMass Medical School communities to attend a Veterans’ Day tribute on Thursday, Nov. 7.

The event will feature a presentation from orthopedic surgeon and U. S. Navy Reservist Mark Price, MD, PhD, assistant professor of orthopedics & physical rehabilitation. After serving a nine-month tour in Afghanistan and performing surgery on soldiers wounded in action, Dr. Price was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat situations and for his innovation in outfitting a mobile hospital unit. He will talk about his experiences as a military physician in Afghanistan, which the Worcester Telegram & Gazette covered when he was honored with the Bronze Star.

The Veteran’s Day tribute will be held in the Faculty Conference Room, University Campus from noon to 1 p.m., with a light lunch available at 11:30 a.m.

Representatives of the Massachusetts Department of Veterans Services, National Center for Homeless Veterans, the Central Massachusetts chapter of Blue Star Mothers, and the Worcester Chapter of the 87th Infantry Division of the Battle of the Bulge Group will be on hand, and donations of non-perishable food for Veterans Services will be collected at the event.

RSVPs should be made by Nov. 1, either online or by calling 508-334-4462.
