‘State of Medicine’ event introduces new med students to organized medicine

Massachusetts Congressman James McGovern and physician–educator Lynda Young are the featured speakers at an August 20 event aimed at introducing School of Medicine students to the Worcester District Medical Society, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the American Medical Association, and the opportunities in these organizations for medical students.

Sponsored by the SOM Organized Medicine Interest Group, State of Medicine will feature brief talks by Dr. Young, who is the recent past director of the WDMS, clinical professor of pediatrics and the chief of community pediatrics at UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center, and Congressman McGovern, who represents the Mass. Second Congressional District and is a longtime advocate of UMMS. They will each address current health policy issues from the perspective of their area of expertise. The talks will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

Chancellor Michael F. Collins will provide opening remarks and introductions. The event will take place in the Albert Sherman Center amphitheater on the 2nd floor, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
