Richard Perugini, MD, assistant professor of surgery and surgical director of the UMass Memorial Weight Center, has seen firsthand the positive impact of gastric bypass surgery on patients with type 2 diabetes for years.

Numerous studies have shown the surgery improves type 2 diabetes in obese patients with the disease, and the latest research, published June 5 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, provides further evidence.

In this Expert’s Corner video, Dr. Perugini explains how he tracks the numbers at UMMS and who he says are the best candidates for weight loss surgery.
