Dr. Mary Maloney advocates for tighter FDA controls on indoor tanning

Professor Mary Maloney, MD, is quoted in media outlets across the country this week, advocating for stricter federal regulations on tanning beds.

Dr. Maloney, professor of medicine, director of dermatologic surgery and spokeswoman for the American Academy of Dermatology, applauds the Food and Drug Administration’s proposal to issue warnings on the skin cancer risks associated with tanning bed use and urge children under 18 not to use them. Maloney served on the FDA advisory panel that first recommended the changes.

“The science is clear,” Maloney is quoted in the New York Times. “The risk of developing melanoma increases 75 percent for individuals who have been exposed to ultraviolet radiation from indoor tanning.”
