UMass Medical School is leading a consortium of academic medical centers in establishing the first U.S. research registry for total joint replacements. In a recent article in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, Patricia D. Franklin, MD, MBA, MPH, professor of orthopedics & physical rehabilitation and family medicine & community health, and David Ayers, MD, the Arthur M. Pappas, MD, Chair in Orthopedics and chair and professor of orthopedics & physical rehabilitation, talk about the importance of the registry and how it will work.
“What is different about this approach is that it is patient-centered,” Dr. Ayers said. “This approach takes into account whether the quality of life for the patient with the implant is improving, in terms of pain relief and their ability to function.”
