An ambassador for Work Without Limits, a UMass Medical School initiative to enhance employment opportunities for people with disabilities, was featured in today’s Boston Globe as an example of how a disability does not have to be a barrier to employment. Bo Tanner, the aquatics director at Eaglebrook School, has found success as a swimming coach, teacher and motivator of students while enjoying an active athletic life, despite relying on a wheelchair and crutches for mobility.
Work Without Limits was created through a statewide strategic plan to improve employment outcomes for people with disabilities, undertaken as part of the Medicaid Infrastructure-Comprehensive Employment Opportunities (MI-CEO) grant that UMass Medical School has received in partnership with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services since 2003. The MI-CEO grant is managed by the Disability, Health and Employment Policy unit at the Center for Health Policy and Research at Commonwealth Medicine, the public sector health consulting division of UMMS.
Tanner was one of six people profiled on the Work Without Limits website as part of a public awareness campaign launch in the spring.
