UMass president looks to build on strengths

Robert Caret visits campus and discusses plans for the future

UMass President Robert L. Caret met with local media on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the LRB and touched upon his plans for the University as he settles into his presidency.

“What I would like to do is build on the strengths and improve the focus of each campus. The system in general, and Worcester in particular . . . really knows where it’s going and has a great plan in place. If you look at the outcomes, all the outcomes are headed in the right direction,” said President Caret. “So we will build on that strength and we will look for ways to continue to improve what we are doing.”

Caret said his role will be to work with the “sphere of influence,” including the governor, state legislature, science boards and the business community, to get the support needed to accomplish the University’s goals.

“Massachusetts is never going to achieve the kind of future it sees for itself without a vital University of Massachusetts as a partner. We are such a big piece of what happens in the state. The state just can’t get there without us,” said Caret.
