Friday, March 15, is Match Day for all medical schools in the United Sates. Here at UMass Medical School, this year’s celebration will feature old traditions in a new location.
For the first time, medical students and their friends and family will gather in the newly opened Albert Sherman Center on the first floor for the match ceremony. Beginning a little before noon, students will be called one by one to receive envelopes containing information about their match from Mai-Lan Rogoff, MD, associate dean for student affairs. Each student will place a dollar in a basket when they receive their envelope, with the exception of the last student called, who will receive the pot of money as compensation for being called last. Once the clock strikes 12, members of the class will open their envelopes as a group and the room will erupt in shouts of joy, high fives, hugs and possibly a few tears.
