Arthur Like, MD, professor emeritus of pathology, died on Sunday, June 9, at the age of 84. Dr. Like was recruited to UMass Medical School in 1975 by Guido Majno, MD, the founding chair of the Pathology Department, from the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He retired in 2006 and was appointed professor emeritus.
Like devoted more than four decades of his life to diabetes research. He was successful in obtaining successive long-term funding from the National Institutes for Health, which supported his laboratory at UMMS. Like was instrumental in the creation of the UMass Memorial Diabetes Center for Excellence and in the development of an important animal model used in diabetes research.
As professor of pathology, Like taught medical students and ran the second-year pathology course. He helped establish a pathology residency program at UMMS and continued to practice as a clinical pathologist both at UMass Memorial and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he enjoyed working alongside medical residents, fellows and other pathologists.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Joslin Diabetes Center. To leave a note of condolence for Like’s family, visit, www.brittonfuneralhomes.com.
