Samuel Shem, acclaimed author of the novel The House of God that shed light on the brutality of American medical education in the 1970s, and the novel The Spirit of the Place that tells the story of an established physician reconnecting with the humanity in his profession, will be speaking at UMass Medical School on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
Presented by the Bioethics Interest Group, the Student Body Committee and the Lamar Soutter Library, Shem will present Staying Human in Health Care: From the House of God to the Spirit of Place and will sign copies of his books, which will be available for purchase at the event.
Samuel Shem is the pen name of Stephan Bergman, MD, PhD, who in addition to being a writer is a psychiatrist and activist.
