The Diversity and Equal Opportunity Office will host its second annual LGBTA Convocation Luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 17, featuring keynote speaker Harvey Makadon, MD. The luncheon is one of numerous events taking place during Convocation week at UMass Medical School.
Dr. Makadon, clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, is director of the National LGBT Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute. With its mission to ensure access to quality, culturally competent medical and mental health care for traditionally underserved communities, LGBT people and those affected by HIV/AIDS, The Fenway Institute is the research, training and health policy and public health advocacy division of Fenway Health, now one of the world’s largest LGBT-focused community health centers.
Makadon is lead editor of The Fenway Guide to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health, the nation's first medical textbook focused on LGBT people, published by the American College of Physicians in 2008. In 2010, he was appointed to the Committee on LGBT Health Issues and Research Gaps and Opportunities for the Institute of Medicine’s report The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Building a Foundation for Better Understanding. Published in 2011, the report is a milestone in federal recognition of LGBT people as a population with specific health needs.
The luncheon will be held in the Cube at the Albert Sherman Center from noon to 1 p.m., with lunch available at 11:30 a.m. RSVP to Fernanda.firstname.lastname@example.org.
