Residents and medical students participation in the neonatal- perinatal medicine training program

The NICU/Normal Newborn experience is located at UMass Memorial Health Care - Memorial Campus, the tertiary regional perinatal center for Central Massachusetts which has 10,500 deliveries per year. There were 4,000 deliveries at the regional center including 250 maternal high-risk transports. The high-risk service is an integral part of the program (located adjacent to the NICU) and is supervised by two full-time perinatologists. About one-fourth (900) of the total deliveries are service patients.

The newborn service consists of approximately 3,625 well babies and the NICU which has around 500-550 admissions per year with 55 percent weighing less than 2500 grams. The NICU has 27 NICU/IICU and 16 CCN beds which average about 95-98% percent occupancy. The NICU and Maternity occupy a new NICU/maternity area on two floors of the East Building occupied in June, 1996.
