Skype for Business lets you connect with the people you need to reach to get your job done. With instant messaging (IM), audio, video, and web conferencing, you can collaborate and communicate your way with colleagues and clients--including Skype contacts in real time, on the devices you want.
Ready for Skype for Business?
Skype for Business is available to you and your group. To request access to Skype for Business, email Helpdesk@umassmed.edu or call 508-856-8643. Once IT sets you up with a Skype account, download Skype for Business by visiting our IT SoftStore.
Instant Message with people within the UMMS organization as well as people outside the UMMS organization. This includes people on the consumer version of Skype and Companies/Universities that have deployed Lync/Skype for Business.
Presence establishes and displays a user’s personal availability and willingness to communicate through the use of common states such as Available or Busy, as well as more detailed states such as Be Right Back and Do Not Disturb. This rich presence information enables other users to immediately make effective communication choices.
Lync Server includes support for IM conferencing, audio conferencing, web conferencing, video conferencing, and application sharing, for both scheduled and impromptu meetings. All these meeting types are supported with a single client. People outside of UMMS can join the meeting using the web client on their PC. (Currently the web client is only supported in Internet Explorer.) Click here to learn how to use Skype for IM and online meetings.
PLEASE NOTE: The ability to dial into a meeting via a Phone is not supported at this time. All meeting attendance must be done through the Skype for Business desktop client or Skype for Business web client.
Mobile Client Support
UMMS users can access Skype for Business functionality when using supported Apple iOS, Android, Windows Phone, or Nokia mobile devices and perform such activities as sending and receiving instant messages, viewing contacts, viewing presence and attending meetings. Video calls similar to "Facetime"
You can make face-to-face video calls with your contacts. All you need is a camera and your computer’s speakers and microphone. You can also use a headset if your computer doesn’t have a built-in audio device. Click here to find out how to make and receive video calls using Skype for Business
If you are migrated to O365, windows user can download Skype for Business and Mac users can download Lync from IT SoftStore. If you are not migrated please call helpdesk so IT can set you up to download Skype for Business
Yes - there is a known issue with using the lync client with Skype for Business. You will not be able to share your desktop or video chat with people.
If you have Lync 2010 or Lync 2013 installed on your desktop you can upgrade to Skype for Business using the software store. The Lync client will be uninstalled as part of the Skype for Business upgrade.
