August 17, 2013 Upgrade to Blackboard Learn

Bb Learn will be unavailable from Saturday, 8/17/13 from 8:30 PM through 8:30 AM, Sunday, 8/18/13.

We are about to upgrade Blackboard Learn to a new student-centered, more modern and user friendly version which we believe will improve your educational experience.  This new version of Blackboard Learn was developed with feedback from nearly 640 institutions and 600 students. This has made Blackboard Learn simply better for educators and students.

Some of the most exciting new things you will see are:

  • New Calendar Tool movie
This new calendar allows personalization and customization. Items with due dates will automatically appear in the calendar and you can update an event by dragging and dropping it to a new date. Also, there is the ability to import the Bb Learn calendar to an external calendar.

With this new calendar tool, the calendar module will be retired; links to content previously delivered through calendar events will now be delivered through a Sessions Table as outline in the following PDF:

  • My Blackboard  movie
A completely new, modern user experience in Blackboard Learn that consolidates critical information from all your courses. The new tools in My Blackboard – Profile, Posts, Updates, My Grades and People - were developed to meet your needs. You can easily see your grades at any moment, and stay up-to-date on conversations and notifications from all of your courses.

  • New Global Navigation Menu movie
Always present in the top right corner, the new navigation menu is the entry point to My Blackboard and also provides one-click access to your Courses, Settings, and Blackboard Help. Additionally, the new menu will tell you how many items in My Blackboard are new or need your attention.

  • Retention Center movie
The Retention Center is an instructor-only tool that enables instructors to give focused attention to students who need it. It replaces the Early Warning System feature with easy workflows, while retaining all existing Early Warning System data and rules. This was first released as a standalone Building Block and has been bundled and enabled in this release.

  • Discussions movie
The Discussion Board user interface has been updated in two primary ways: the thread detail page has been thoroughly redesigned while maintaining all of its current functionality and instructors can now require students to first post to a forum before they can see other students’ posts. This was first released as a standalone Building Block and has been bundled and enabled in this release.

  • Inline Assignment Grading
Inline Assignment Grading is a revision to the workflow for grading Assignments in Blackboard Learn. Instead of requiring instructors to download student-submitted files to view or edit those submissions, instructors will now be able to view student-submitted files “inline,” i.e. in the web browser, without requiring any plugins, applets, or client-side applications. Additionally, annotation tools will be made available as part of the inline viewer, enabling instructors to provide feedback including comments, highlights, and even drawings/annotations directly on the inline view of the document.
