The addition of a new child to your family is considered a qualified Change in Family Status that allows you to make changes in your benefits outside of the usual open enrollment period. The benefits potentially affected by the adoption of a child are outlined below.
You can also access adoption assistance offered by UMass Medical School to eligible employees*. This program provides financial assistance on a per child basis for certain IRS qualified adoption expenses. Qualified expenses include attorney fees, court costs, adoption fees and traveling expenses. The maximum amount for 2014 is $1,000. To apply for this program you must complete and submit the Adoption Assistance Reimbursement Request Form to the Benefits in the HR Service Center within 90 days of final adoption. * All benefited non-union full and part-time employees including faculty, residents and post docs are eligible.
To add your child to your health insurance, you must complete and sign the
GIC Insurance Enrollment and Change Form (Form 1) and the Insurance Data Form (IDF). Please submit these forms along with a copy of the birth certificate and the adoption certificate to the UMMS Benefits Service Center within 30 days of adoption.
If you want to add your child to your dental insurance, you must complete the Cigna Dental Enrollment/Change Form or you can add your child during open enrollment in the spring of every year. You must submit the form to the UMMS Benefits Service Center within 30 days of adoption.

If you have VSP and you want to add your child to your plan you must complete and submit the VSP Enrollment Form to the UMMS Benefits Service Center within 30 days of adoption.

The adoption of a child allows you to enroll in or make adjustments to the Health Care Spending Account (HCSA) and Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP). If you want to enroll or make changes please complete and submit FSA Enrollment Form to the Benefits in the HR Service Center. If you are adopting a child you may be eligible for a Leave of Absence under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or the Massachusetts Maternity Leave Act (MMLA). For more information please go to the Leave of Absence section on this website.
