What is Hospital Medicine?

Hospital medicine physicians - also known as hospitalists - have specialized training to coordinate and provide inpatient care for hospitalized patients from the day of admission through discharge. Hospitalists work closely with each patient's personal physician, and emphasize communication between the patient, his/her health care team and his/her family.

Our Mission

The mission of the Division of Hospital Medicine is to provide the highest quality care to the adult hospitalized population that adheres to national standards yet is delivered in a personalized, patient-focused manner. The Division plays a central role in the education of medical students, residents, and other health care providers both in the informal venue of daily rounds and by participating in the residency curriculum. The Division continues to provide guidance and leadership in health care delivery and quality improvement in hospital medicine.

Project BOOST at Marlborough Hospital

UMass Memorial Health Care, Marlborough Campus is one of 24 sites across the nation to be selected in 2008 to participate in Project BOOST. Project BOOST is a national project that has developed tools to improve the discharge process and transitions of care. Our program has had the guidance of a mentor that has helped us through all the stages, from conception to implementation and surveillance. Project BOOST has become the foundation of many transitions of care and discharge initiatives at our institution.

Nurse Practitioners

We have ten full-time nurse practitioners/physician assistants who work alongside the physicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This dynamic group provides wonderful opportunities for midlevel providers while managing to combine ample physician support with a good deal of autonomy. In addition to managing an individual inpatient medicine service and providing cross-coverage for the Department of Hospital Medicine at night at Memorial Campus, this group covers the Rapid Response pager, takes first call coverage for neurosurgery, urology, otolaryngology and cardiology on nights, makes rounds on the urology and neurosurgery services on weekends, and provides medical co-management of patients on the Clinton Hospital Geriatric Medical Psychiatry Unit.
