Application Process
Eligibility
Graduates of approved U.S. and foreign medical schools and accredited colleges of osteopathic medicine who have completed approved residency programs in internal medicine are eligible. All applicants must be eligible for Massachusetts Full or Limited Registration License must meet the UMCMS GME Technical Standards and must either be U.S. citizens or have appropriate documentation and/or visa to work in the United States. Graduates of foreign medical schools must have passed Steps 1, 2 and 3 of the USMLE and hold a valid ECFMG certificate and be Board eligible for Internal Medicine.
Application Submission
Application process is via the ERAS application system.
The following should be included:
- Common Application Form
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal statement
- Minimum of three letters of recommendations, preferably by Hematology-Oncology professors, one must be from current Program Director
- Deans Letter
- Transcripts
- USMLE or COMLEX Scores
For International Medical Graduates:
- Valid ECFMG certificate
- Scores of Parts I, II and III & USMLE or COMLEX
- Clinical experience in internal medicine in the United States (or Canada if Canadian citizen)
- Fluency in spoken and written English since communication skills are the core of internal medicine and Hematology-Oncology
- Good USMLE scores
- Letters of recommendations from U.S. physicians familiar with applicant's work preferably in Hematology-Oncology
- VISA
UMCMS fellowship training programs may accept J-1 clinical visas and may sponsor H-1B visas in rare circumstances for an exceptional candidate. Both the Graduate Medical Education Office and the Office of International Students and Scholars must review all files of applicants with H1-B visas.
Selection Process
Programs will not discriminate based on race, gender, religion, age, national origin, sexual preference, disability, or veteran status. Programs will select fellows from the eligible applicant pool based on academic credentials, communication skills and personal qualities, such as integrity and motivation.
Applicants are screened by members of the Division of Hematology-Oncology and select candidates will be invited for interviews. The Program Director, Division Chief, and/or faculty members interview each applicant. Files are presented, reviewed, and ranked by the Program Director and reviewed by the Hematology-Oncology Division. The rank list is then submitted to NRMP.
