Dr. Schilling joined the UMASS GSN faculty in September, 2005. Prior to that, she was a Research Scientist at Yale School of Nursing. Her responsibilities there included grant management for type 1 diabetes studies, and she was the Principal Investigator of a R01 grant from NINR entitled “Measuring Self-Management of Type 1 Diabetes in Youth.”
She had faculty positions both at Yale School of Nursing and the University of Florida’s College of Nursing.
Dr. Schilling’s research, fueled by almost 1.5 million dollars in funding, has focused on the self-management of type 1 diabetes in youth - defining the concept of self-management in youth with diabetes, describing how the activities of self-management are shared by youth and their parents, assessing measurement issues, and developing an instrument to measure self-management.
