Getting from here, to there. . .
Recent studies have shown that student, faculty and staff commuting is the major contributor to the University Campus’s carbon footprint, accounting for 55 percent of total CO2 emissions in 2003 and 60 percent in 2007.
To help reduce individual daily vehicle trips to the campus, the school promotes several options including:
WRTA Bus Pass Program
In 2010 the school launched a new program in partnership with the Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA) whereby anyone who surrenders a University Campus parking or shuttle pass will receive a free WRTA bus pass for unlimited travel. To launch the program, University Campus employees who live within a quarter-mile of a WRTA bus stop received a mailing explaining the details of the program. These individuals were identified by merging the University Campus employee database with a geo-mapping program showing every WRTA bus route, and targeting any employee with a residence within a quarter of a mile of a bus stop. The program was closed in 2010.
To facilitate ridesharing, the Medical School participates in the MassRIDES program, administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
