Student Travel - UMMS Affiliation Agreements and GHE Sites

In FY 2014 the Office of Global Health (OGH), The Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (OUME) and the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) embarked on a mission to create a new process for approving and tracking UMMS student Global Health Experiences in order to: (a) ensure high-quality learning experiences for students, (b) comply with new UMMS rules and policies regarding travel, and (c) provide improved organization and communication between OGH, OUME and OSA. During the course of their medical school education, many UMMS students want to gain experience in global health through clinical, research, public health, community service, cultural or language training opportunities.

One of the most important requirements in the completion of the Global Health Experience Request (GHER) for clinical experiences in global health is the verification of either an LOA or a MOU for the applicable host location. For global health experiences that do not include clinical activities and occur at an institution where there is no LOA or MOU (e.g., Spanish language classes at a language school in Central America), the OUME has other forms that can be used.

These formal agreement documents guarantee that each student participant has a local contact and supervisor for their Global Health Experience, and that both UMMS and the host institution outside of the U.S. agree to the hosting of students.

In order to obtain an LOA template, please contact the Office of Global Health.
