Utilizing Leading-edge Modalities

The Liver, Biliary and Pancreatic Center was the first medical facility in Massachusetts to use endoscopic ultrasonography in the evaluation of gastrointestinal disorders. Other diagnostic endoscopic services include ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), biliary and pancreatic manometry, intraoperative endoscopy, and biliary and pancreatic juice analysis.

Therapeutic endoscopic services include biliary and pancreatic-duct stent placementfor benign and malignant strictures, expandable metal stent placements for biliary strictures, endoscopic drainage of pseudocysts, mechanical lithotripsy for biliary and pancreatic stone disease, and balloon dilatation of benign biliary and pancreatic duct strictures.

Our Endoscopy Suite features state of the art video-chip endoscopic technology, providing hard copy and video documentation. Reports and photos are generated immediately and copies are sent to the referring physician.

The University of Massachusetts Medical Center is one of the country's fastest growing university medical research centers. The Liver, Biliary and Pancreatic Center is researching a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, including:

  • Interferon for improved initial tretment of cronic viral hepatitis.
  • Interferon and other drugs for retreatment of patients who failed to respond adequately or who experienced recrudescence after initial interferon treatment.
  • New treatments for primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and other chronic cholestastic liver diseases.
  • New treatments for complications of chronic liver diseases, including variceal sclerosis, banding and transvenous intrahepatic portosystemic shunting (TIPS).
  • New methods for evaluating patients with possible iron-storage disease.

When transplantation is the best therapeutic alternative, the UMass Liver Center provides efficient and rapid evaluation and support for patients and families during and after the transplant itself.
