Gastroenterology Clinic

Our Clinic, located on Level A of the Hospital, adjacent to the GI Endoscopy Suite operates five days per week. This area has recently been renovated and now includes four exam rooms, a procedure room where highly specialized tests are done as necessary, and office space for the Clinic's nurse manager, the clinical research nurse, and DDN Fellows. The staff of the Clinic also includes three Health Assistant/Unit Aide Clerks. Endoscopy Suite: The UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus Endoscopy Suite is a unit specially designed for performing gastrointestinal endoscopy. The unit is utilized by the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics. The features of the Endoscopy Unit include state-of-the-art video "chip" endoscope technology, employing hard copy and video documentation. Also available in the Endoscopy Unit are enteroscopy and endoscopic ultrasound. The design features of the Endoscopy Unit also include custom-designed built-in cabinetry, state-of-the-art recovery facilities, and video demonstration courses. Two data management systems are in place including a voice-activated dictation system (Endospeak) equipped with Laserwriter for immediate printing of reports and a data management system designed by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

The Endoscopy Unit is staffed by a full complement of clerical, technical, and nursing staff, including 24-hour, seven-day technician coverage for assistance with off-hour procedures. Medical Short Stay Area: This twelve-bed unit, located on the 7th Floor of the Hospital, is a procedure and recovery area. It is staffed by R.N.'s and is available only for outpatients. Patients may be admitted to this unit before a procedure (e.g., ERCP, PEG) and returned to the unit for recovery after the procedure is complete. Some procedures such as therapeutic paracenteses and liver biopsies are performed chiefly in the Short Stay Area.

Laboratory and Office Space

Each fellow is assigned office space within UMMS or Worcester Medical Center. The desks of first and second year fellows are on the 6th floor of UMMS where the main office and all faculty offices are located. The Division's three research laboratories are also located on the 6th Floor. These laboratories combined equal approximately 4,000 square feet of laboratory and office space for all research personnel in the Division. The desks of third year fellows are located in the DDN Clinic.
