Didactic Program
The didactic program is administered by the dental faculty in conjunction with the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. An educational series in each of the six dental specialties (oral surgery, restorative, periodontics, pedodontics, orthodontics, and endodontics) is offered by residency program faculty. These seminars are designed to take the resident beyond the scope of dental school training by expanding the integration of clinical practice with didactic theory. Other didactic programs include: hospital organization and function, oral pathology, forensic dentistry, practice management, head and neck anatomy, and implant dentistry. Regularly-held patient care conferences will cover topics including quality assurance, literature reviews, and diagnosis and treatment planning. Residents will benefit directly from the affiliation with Tufts and its well-established didactic program.
Clinical Rotations
Residents will participate in rotations including anesthesia, family medicine, operating and emergency rooms, and treatment of special needs patients. The overall goal of the curriculum is to incorporate these clinical experiences into the practice of everyday dentistry.
Clinical Training
Residents will be located at one of two participating Federally Qualified Health Centers in Worcester: Family Health Center and Great Brook Valley Health Center. Both are long-standing and well-established community health centers with extensive experience in teaching and providing residents with opportunities to treat a wide variety of medical and dental issues. As a resident, you will manage comprehensive cases and participate in the unique challenges of working in a multicultural healthcare environment. In addition, you will collaborate with interpreters and social workers to learn about the complex social needs of patients and the impact on dental health. Residents will be supervised by health center staff as well as dentists who are committed teachers and community volunteers. Patient care and behavioral management experiences will occur in a diversity of settings.
