Preventive Medicine

Learning Objectives 

The academic, practicum, research, scholarly and clinical activities described above provide trainees with knowledge, skills and expertise in many areas of public health and preventive medicine. The preventive medicine core faculty and members of the Residency Advisory Committee recognize the importance of offering a training program that provides enough structure to insure that all trainees acquire a solid grounding in preventive medicine and public health, but enough flexibility to accommodate individual career goals. With this in mind, the University of Massachusetts Preventive Medicine Training Program faculty members have developed a summary of required and optional training based on the competencies for preventive medicine trainees recommended by the American College of Preventive Medicine. Trainees receive the list of required and optional competencies at orientation. The competencies are tracked and measured throughout training. The bi-annual review evaluation documents development of competencies for each trainee. Trainees are expected to develop competency in all of the skills defined in section 1 and basic knowledge of all subjects listed in section 2. Section 3 lists required and optional experiences, including settings, strategies, populations and content.
