All fellows are expected to conduct clinical or basic research in Endocrinology during their training. Trainees who are dedicated to a career in research and academic medicine may opt for the three-year research fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, which is funded by an NIH research training grant. In addition to clinical training, research fellows participate in basic or clinical research supervised by one of the faculty on the training grant. Research in Diabetes and Endocrinology is contained in a spectrum of departments including the Division of Diabetes, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center (NIH-sponsored) and the Diabetes Center of Excellence. Many faculty members from the departments of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Physiology, Molecular Medicine, and Pediatrics serve on the training grant, thereby providing many opportunities for participation in both clinical and basic science research projects.
